Angel Water

Here's a recent drawing a did of my cat Josie, having her morning Angel Water. This small statue sits out on my patio, and I have always filled her basin as I water the flowers - a kind of offering to the flower fairies. Don't laugh. You just never know.

I think Josie accepted this as her "princess" bowl of water that gets filled every morning in the spring and summer. Flower fairies aside, I now fill it every morning for Josie.
 

Here are a couple steps along the way.

I did her whiskers by drawing them (pressing in) with one of my inkless pens before applying the colored pencil. The colored pencil won't go down into the furrows created unless you press really hard. Just be delicate about it, and you can create fine hairs, whiskers, grasses, etc - all those tiny lines that are difficult to draw in later.

Below is my inkless pen collection. You can have your own by buying Bic pens 

and using them up until the ink is gone! Haha!

Tux

This is my grandson Tux. What a kid! I had the pleasure of spending a whole week with him recently when he flew home with his mom. He is four years old and can name dinosaurs and reptiles with an accuracy I would have to study up on for weeks, possibly months. Yeah. Probably months. I know easy ones like T-Rex and rattlesnakes, but this kid was schooling me on saw-scaled vipers and titanaboas.

I pulled this image from simple google search to share, because I thought you might like to add the knowledge to your brain bank in case you run into Tux somewhere. This is his favorite snake.

I was reading to him a page from a reptile book about Gila Monsters, incorrectly pronouncing it with a hard "G" sound. He politely corrected me, and I now know that it is pronounced Hee-la monster.

Speaking of being polite, he came downstairs one morning and said "Good morning, Grandma. How did you sleep?" Four years old! But . . . he is a boy. He was also found here with his cousin Tilly:

And he wasn't very polite about having to bathe. Haha!

I think this is the only photo I have of the three boys together, 

mostly because the little one on the right (Novan) never sits still.

The image at the top of the page is done in oils. While his mom was here visiting, I couldn't NOT show her and give it to her in person. It is an image that will go in the family calendar. The one in the calendar won't look exactly the same, so it will still be somewhat of a surprise. I dropped it into Procreate and did magical things with it that I'll share here in January.

The process:

I didn't even draw this one out. I just started painting (on gessoboard).

 I have to say, I was getting very excited about the way it was turning out at this point.

Putting in a background, after the image is painted seems backward. I don't recommend it. Like I said, I just jumped in and started painting, from a photo his mom Ashley had sent. As I tried to figure out what I was doing back there, I had to keep touching up the edges of his image. Just backward. 

But until his image was done, I didn't know what background I wanted so . . . ? hmmmm.

I tried a couple ideas. The one I ended up with at the top of the page, made him look,

in my humble opinion, the most animated and three-dimensional. 

Plus, I was tired of touching up edges!

I have to say, I get a lot of amazing photos from his mom and he is such a character that I could most likely make a career of creating images of him. Just look at this guy! Haha!

My 10 Year Blog-aversary

Woohoo! Here we are. Ten years! Kind of a BIG DEAL for me!

This is post number 311! 

My blog has been my patient friend. It knows that sometimes life gets distracting. Even when I'm not paying as much attention to it, it doesn't go away. It's there for me when I'm ready. My friend waits for me to work through creative block, and doesn't roll its eyes when I promise to blog once a week. My friend says, "you do you, Tracy." 

I started Wet Paint primarily to be able to participate in Illustration Friday. Unfortunately, no longer with us, it was a site with a weekly one-word prompt. Illustrators had a week, from Friday to Friday, to create a piece based on the prompt, then share it, receive comments and encouragement, and dole out the same to other artists. It was great!  And it existed at the perfect time for me. I was getting away from fine art and working to be a little more creative, free, and illustrator-like.

Ten years is a long(ish) time and I've been through ups and downs with my creative work. I had 45 posts in 2018 and only 6 in 2020! I'm up to 39 this year already, well on the way to my best blog-year yet! 

I've shared paintings, and craft projects throughout these 10 years. I've written a few children's book manuscripts: a chapter book, that I shared here in February, and 2 other picture books that I plan to share before the year is up. 

Wet Paint is my catchall. It really doesn't care what I'm doing as long as I'm happy doing it. It's here so that I can share with you. "You do you, Wet Paint." Thank you!

Inspired by some pieces I found on Pinterest. I did this just for fun. 

A zen type of doodle/coloring project with sparkly gel pens.

I dropped it into Procreate and started playing around,

and that's when I thought it would make a nice congratulatory card for myself!

From January of 2016, it's another piece that I did just for myself and for the fun of it.

My Bedroom Wall. Yes, Still a Teenager at Heart.

I am approaching my 10 year anniversary with my blog and have been busy with so many things: preparing for a big family staycation in July, a project painting ceramic fish, and pieces for my yearly calendar. (Sorry, but it'll take the fun out of the calendar to share those things ahead of time. I do promise to post later.)

I just wanted to share another little piece of myself, my bedroom wall, with some of my favorite works, and invite anyone reading to stop by on the 23rd of June as I celebrate . . . me! 

That big swirly painting in the center was a piece I did in oils, just for play. Within its swirls are words of inspiration I paraphrased from Martha Graham. I doubt you can read from the photo so I'll share here with you.

There is a vitality, a life force, a quickening

Happy Birthday, Tonnya!

Today is my sister's birthday, and here she is! Happy Birthday, Tonnya! She's somewhere a bit upward of 39, but who's counting?

The photo I worked from was taken by my niece, Tara. Last August she hosted a dinner party at my mom's house for me and my daughter Louisa, her mom, and her grandma. It was an absolutely lovely evening, thanking us for supporting her and the handbag she designed that had just been released. She is so incredibly talented. (Click here to see it and check out her website). She brought all the food and tableware, and took photos of all of us.

We felt so pampered!

The food! Delicious, and with the exception of the chicken breasts, 

most of it was vegan for Aunt Tracy.

We didn't get photos of the desserts. 

Trust me, we had dessert. Just forgot to get the photo.

Here are some steps in the art process:

I did this piece in Procreate on my iPad. I began by working over the top of the actual photo, outlining the important areas. I had a vision of what I wanted it to look like and didn't want to spend all my time getting proportions right by freehanding. 

Then, the fun part of dropping in the color and doing the "painting".

And then . . . Tada! 

The wine is poured and we have the finished piece at the top of this page.

Chocolate Bunnies Aren't Just for Easter

 What a cutie!!! And he's actually from Switzerland!

My niece brought me this treat, from a business trip, as a thank you for helping her with a writing project. He was delicious! But, before I could eat him, I had to get a photo to remember him by.

I started him with acrylics on illustration board:

Then, I dropped him into Procreate on my iPad and finished him up. 

I used only one brush - "old brush"- for both painting and blending.
